Course Selection for CURRENT GHS Students 
2020-2021


​Course selection begins Monday, April 12, 2021 and ends on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 2:15 pm.

Courses will be selected using a unique, grade level link through Microsoft Forms.

**Questions/concerns should be EMAILED to the CURRENT grade level counselor. Email addresses are listed below.

Students who do not submit forms on time will have courses chosen for them based on need, availability, and space. Those students will have no input in their course selection, and schedules WILL NOT be changed in the fall. 

If you are a former or partial IB student, Ms. Morris will continue to be your counselor through graduation. Please click HERE to select your courses.

​For current 10th and 11th grade students/parents:​

  1. Review TN Graduation Requirements (see below).​
  2. ​Review your Grade History in PowerSchool. ​​ Click on “Grade History” on the left side of the screen then choose the school years you want to review. This would include high school, as well as any grades from 8th grade for which you earned a high school credit that will appear on your transcript.
  3. ​​Click on the link to the form for your correct grade level.
  4. ​Completely fill out the form including demographic information.
  5. ​Submit the form by the deadline of Friday, April 23, 2021 at 2:15 pm.

Tennessee Minimum Course Requirements for Graduation

SCS Promotion Requirements

  • To be promoted to 10th grade, you must earn a minimum of 5 credits including English 9. 
  • To be promoted to 11th grade, you must earn a minimum of 11 credits including English 9 and 10. 
  • To be promoted to 12th grade, you must earn a minimum of 16 credits including English 9, 10, and 11. 
  • Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student being retained. There are no exceptions to this policy. 
  • Students who attend summer school will not be promoted to the next grade level until GHS receives the SS grades and transcripts have been updated. This usually occurs after school begins in the fall. 

Additional Information Regarding Credits/Requirements

*Alternate PE Credit:
  • Students who participate in a school sponsored team sport, marching band, color guard, or Production Workshop can submit an Alternate PE form to satisfy the .5 PE credit for graduation.
  • Forms can be obtained from the grade level counselor.
  • Students who do not turn in the form in a timely fashion will be required to take PE/Lifetime Sports.​​

Clarification on courses taken in 8th grade

  • Courses may include Algebra I, Physical Science, or Foreign Language
  • Courses DO COUNT toward the minimum graduation requirements.
  • For example: If a student takes Physical Science in 8th grade and receives high school credit for the course, he/she can then take Biology and Chemistry in high school to complete the minimum graduation requirements.
  • Even though Algebra I in 8th grade counts as one of the required math courses, TN State Law requires any student enrolled in a TN public high school to be enrolled in a math course.
  • Courses MUST APPEAR on the transcript in order for the requirement to be met. This is especially important for students who transfer in from other school districts or private schools.

Course Substitutions:
  • There are courses that can be used as substitutions. These will be discussed with students on a case-by-case basis as it is not a common issue.
  • Example: AJROTC in both 9th and 10th grades can satisfy the Health/Wellness credits (1.5)​

​Waiving Foreign Language (FL) /Fine Arts (FA) Requirements

  • For students who struggle with foreign language or who are behind on graduation credits, there is an option of a FL waiver. Students/parents must discuss the FL waiver with the grade level counselor.
  • This waiver allows students to graduate without earning the 2 required credits for FL and the FA credit.
  • In exchange for waiving the FL/FA credits, students will be required to earn 6 elective credits instead of 3.
  • FL/FA credits earned prior to the waiver being signed become part of the 6 required elective credits.
  • Signing a waiver may impact a student’s opportunity to attend a 4 year college straight out of high school but will not impact his/her opportunity to attend a community college or vocational program.

Elective Focus Options 
Elective Focus areas are decided during the 9th or 10th grade year and must be followed through graduation. This does not mean that students cannot choose additional electives, but they must earn the necessary courses within their focus areas once they begin in that area.
